Celebrating 30 Years of Black History Month

This February, PLASP joins Canadians across the country to celebrate 30 years of Black History Month. It’s during this time and beyond that we honour the legacy of Black Canadians and the many ways their contributions have shaped and continue to shape our country’s fabric. This year’s theme is “30 Years of Black History Month: Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations — From Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries” (Government of Canada, 2026).

The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture and Minister responsible for Official Languages had this to say regarding Black History Month: “The stories of Black communities are woven into the very fabric of Canada’s history. As we mark 30 years of Black History Month in Canada, we honour the legacy and contributions of Black Canadians across generations, from those who helped build our country to those shaping its future. This anniversary gives us the opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to advancing equity, inclusion and opportunity for Black communities from coast to coast to coast.”

PLASP’s Curriculum Team is supporting our children and educators with a resource and learning guide developed to foster celebration, education, and reflection throughout Black History Month and beyond. PLASP will share photos of children and staff participating in these activities throughout February on our social media channels.
