Let's See What Matches

Children placing objects on outlines drawn on paper

Matching is an important skill that helps children to develop fundamental math skills. Matching is being able to group objects by similar attributes. For young learners, start with matching colour or shape. This activity begins with a scavenger hunt. Collect items from around your home (start with 6-8 items). Next, using a marker, trace the shape of the items you collected on paper. Then place the papers and the items on the floor. Ask your child to find the items that match with the drawn outline.

What You Will Need:
- Markers
- Paper or cardstock
- Toys/objects from around the house

Engaging Your Child:
Children are more likely to be engaged in an activity when there is someone to share the experience with them. Let your child take the lead in the scavenger hunt by giving him/her a basket/bag to collect the items for your activity. Try jointly to trace the outlines of the items on the paper.  Ask your child open-ended questions for example, “Which item do you think will fit into this shape?”, “Where have we seen this shape before?”  and/or “Are there other things in our home that have this outline? Let’s go have a look!”
