PLASP & The United Way: Why We Encourage You to Give

Children deserve a safe and caring environment in which to grow and develop to their maximum potential. This is a cornerstone of what PLASP Child Care Services believes and strives to deliver in program. PLASP recognizes that in order to champion children’s needs, there exists a need to support the families and communities in which we serve. Recognized as the largest funder of community services in Canada next to government, The United Way remains PLASP’s charity of choice for employee and company giving.

PLASP itself began because of start-up funding provided by The United Way, in addition to other funders. Now PLASP, as an organization, is a financially viable employer of over 1,500 staff providing high quality child care.

Staff Regional Meeting December 4th

“The United Way makes a significant difference in communities’ health and wellbeing.” Stated PLASP CEO, Lynn Hiebert, speaking to over six-hundred PLASP staff during day one of the Regional Staff Meeting held on December 4th. “Every year we ask our staff for help in our employee giving campaign and I’m proud to say that yearly we raise more than $40,000. Since PLASP began giving to The United Way, collectively the organization has given over half-a-million dollars.”

PLASP staff are encouraged to give to The United Way and can participate in the online holiday silent auction taking place in December.

“Oh Deer! I hope I’m top bid for this!”

This year, The United Way’s theme is “Unignorable” (using hashtag #Unignorable for social media posts). Some stats that shouldn’t be ignored are as follows:

  • In Canada 1 in 7 live in poverty and 35,000 people are homeless every night.
  • Toronto is the poverty capital of Canada and 1 in 6 kids are in households where there is a struggle to put food on the table.
  • In Peel 18% of children under 17-years-old live in poverty.
  • 52% of Peel communities are considered low income.
