Erase the Alphabet
The alphabet is the building block of literacy. A good start in teaching the alphabet is just to simply introduce the letters by pointing them out in books, print and in our surroundings. Parents can further assist children by naming the letters and providing the sound that each letter makes (referred to as phonics). This activity is a simple way to practice letter recognition in your own home. On a clear glass door or window, use a dry erase marker to write the letters of the alphabet. Provide your child with a paper towel and ask them to erase the letter that is called out. Tip: Start simple and gradually make it more challenging for your child. Start with letters he/she might know and then work in some newer letters. Older children can participate by practicing words. This activity is fun, simple, and easy to clean-up!
What You Will Need:
- Paper Tower or cloth
- Dry Erase Marker
- An erasable surface like a glass door, a window or a white board
Engaging with Your Child:
Invite your child to the activity, "Let’s go searching for letters in your name. Hmm.. Where is G?” Don’t forget to add the sound the letter makes, “G, gug-guh-guh, G.” Help your child make connections between the letter and some words that begin with that letter, “G is for grape and goat.”
