Poking Through

Children polking objects through the holes of kitchen colanders

Here is another fun activity for your child using everyday household items. During this activity, children will practice using their fine motor skills, pincer grip and hand eye coordination. All that they need to do is figure out which items they can poke through a colander.

What you will need:
- a kitchen colander
- things that can go through holes of a colander (e.g. pipe cleaners, plastic artificial flowers, skewer sticks, or fallen tree branches)

Engaging Your Child:
For younger toddlers you may start the activity with items that will fit through the holes. “Let’s put this flower through the colander. Now you try.” Once they have poked items through a few times successfully, you can take this activity to the next level by providing some items that won’t fit through the colander holes. "Here are some crayons. I wonder if they will fit through these holes?” Throughout this activity you can introduce your child to some new words, for example colander, thin, skinny, thick, fat, stuck, pull, through, poke, tight, squeeze, and so on.
