Matching Pots and Lids

It’s time to pull out all your pots and lids out of the cupboard. For this activity, children will try and match the lids onto the right pot! For children to do this they will engage in many skills, including problem-solving, trial and error and spatial awareness. This activity is filled with math and science so let's get started!

What You Will Need:

-pots with lids

Engaging with Child:

Sometimes children have the most fun with ordinary objects around the home. Pots and lids have always attracted little ones. Start the activity by pulling out all the pots you have with matching lids. Put them all on the ground and invite your child to explore the objects. “I wonder which lid will fit onto this pot? Hmm...” As your child explores the materials and tries lids onto pots, help your child by narrating their actions, “This lid is bigger than this pot. Which one will fit?” or “This pot is oval in shape. Which lid will be right for this kind of pot?”

Variation:

Since you have all the pots and all the lids out, another great activity with these materials is to line the materials up from smallest to biggest and biggest to smallest. Or grouping all the lids by type (metal, glass) or pots by type (pots with long handles, pots with two handles).
