Searching for Letters

Searching for Letters
As your young child learns the alphabet, he/she start will start to recognize letters in their environment. For example, “Mom, that’s G for Gavin!” They may start pointing them out in books, on signs, on packages, etc. For this activity, your child will play detective and search for letters in their name.
-an old magazine or flyers
-a marker or a highlighter
-magnify glass (optional)
Engaging with Your Child:
With so many letters in the alphabet, getting to recognize them all will happen gradually over time. Your child might be able to recognize and name a few letters now and perhaps even the letters in his/her name. One way that you can encourage letter recognition is by pointing them out in the magazine. Start the activity by saying, “I see the letter J here and this is a B.” Point to the letter(s) and draw your child’s attention there. Next, ask your child to circle the letter with his/her marker, “Let’s circle the B. Can we look for more letters?” Ask your child, “What letters do you see?” When they find one, ask them to name and then circle it. Alternatively, you could go searching for specific letters if your child is more familiar with the alphabet.
