Math with Lego Duplo and Dice

Children playing with lego

Who doesn’t love Lego?  For this activity we use Lego Duplo blocks as a math material to support your child’s developing math skills. Roll the dice and then stack the corresponding amount of Lego Duplo pieces. This is a fun and simple math activity for early math learners. Tip:  You may want to start with one die for beginner math learners but for more experienced math learners you could use two or even three dice.

What you will need:

  • Dice

  • Lego Duplo pieces

Engaging with your child

Introduce the activity by announcing, “I know a fun Lego game that we can play. After capturing your child’s the attentionexplain to your child how to play, Let’s roll the die and see what number you roll. You rolled a 4. Now we have to stack 4 Legos. Let’s roll again.”  During the activity, give your child prompts to count, add, and try mental math (counting in their head and giving the final answer verbally). You can turn take with your child until your tower topples or until you have used up all your pieces.
