Measuring with Basters and Water

Children enjoy water activities and this one will promote sensory learning and introduce you child to some mathematic concepts including counting, measurement and estimation. In this activity, your child will use a turkey baster to squeeze water from one container into another. If this is the first time that your child is using a baster, you will need to model how to squeeze water into the baster and then how to squeeze it out.
-
A turkey baster
-
A container holding water (example: juice jug, yogurt container, mixing bowl, etc.)
-
A clear measuring cup (something with measurement
-
Food colouring (optional)
Engaging with Your Child:
Introduce the activity by showing your child the materials, “Here are some containers. This one has some water in it. This thing here is a turkey baster. We can use it to collect water and I wonder how much water I can collect with it.” Using a turkey baster, demonstrate to your child how to get water from the cup and squeeze it out into the measuring cup. Encourage your child to practice a few times. Once your child can use the baster, direct the activity towards counting, measurement and estimation. “How many squirts of water will you need to fill up this measuring cup? Let’s count.” or, “I wonder which container will hold more squirts of water? Let’s compare.” Tip: If you have an older toddler or preschooler, have some paper handy to make tally marks and graph the experience.
