Make a Clock – A Math and Arts Activity to Help Children Learn How to Tell Time

Learning how to tell time is a skill that children need to practice to get the hang of it. Having your child create a face clock to use as a learning tool is a great way to engage them.

Create a clock face using a container lid or old CD/DVD.

You will need:

  • A round object, such as an old CD disk or container lid as the clock face.
  • Sharpie marker
  • String/pipe cleaner/toothpicks

Process

  • Mark the hours of the clock face with the Sharpie marker, starting at the top with 12, and so forth.
  • Mark 5 lines in between each number to resemble the minutes.
  • Use string, pipe cleaners or toothpicks as the big hand and little hand.

Tip:

Have children practice moving the hands around the clock. Ask them if they can mark the current time. Also, practice displaying on their homemade face clock the time seen on a digital clock.
