Tracing Shadows – An Arts and Science Activity

This activity is a fresh twist on creating shadow puppets or tracing facial silhouettes. In this activity children learn how moving a light source around a darkened room will change the shape of an object’s shadow. Have children trace their favourite objects' shadows to practice their hand-eye coordination as well as fine motor skills.

What You Will Need:

  • Paper / tape
  • Flashlight/light source
  • Objects
  • Pencil

Process:

  • Tape a piece of paper on a wall
  • Choose an object you want to draw/trace
  • Shine the light from the flash light towards the wall
  • Trace the shadow of the object with your pencil

Tip:

Have your child move the flashlight around to see how it affects the shape and angels of each object.
