Supporting Fine Motor Development

Are you wondering when your child will be able to write? Perhaps you are excited about seeing your child write his/her name for the first time? Because your young child is still undergoing major development, he/she will not gain the fine motor development required in their hands and fingers to write until they’re closer to 5 years old. There’s a lot you can do to support fine motor development with your child:

-offer your child repeated experiences to manipulate dough or clay to strengthen hand muscles

-offer your child repeated experiences with scribbling, tracing, drawing, painting

-offer your child repeated experiences manipulating items in each hand (slotting, poking, threading, pinching, picking up, grabbing, etc.)

“Growth doesn’t happen at the same speed for every child, but by offering repeated fun experiences with a variety of art and writing materials, you will see forward progress over time” (zerotothree, 2016)Learn more about the writing and art progression for young children https://www.zerotothree.org/resources/305-learning-to-write-and-draw.
