Expressing Emotions Through Song
Children have a wide variety of emotions and because they are not yet fully able to articulate how they feel in words and so their feelings, worries and desires are all shared through facial expressions, body language, sounds and cries. Of course, we all want our children to be happy and content 100% of the time but that’s not going to happen. Adults can help children to appropriately display their emotions through positive modeling and by providing children language to talk about how they feel. Young children love music and songs. Here is a good song to begin your child’s understanding about emotions. Swap out happy and with other emotions such as angry, sad, scared, or excited!
If You’re Happy and You Know It
If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands (clap clap)
If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands (clap clap)
If you're happy and you know it, and you really want to show it
If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands. (clap clap)
-If you’re angry and you know it, stomp your feet (stomp stomp)
-If you’re sad and you know it start to cry (waa waa)
