Musical Pots and Bowls

Infants and toddlers are constantly learning about the world around them. They are described as curious and are often wondering what if I... they might press a button to see what happens or push something off a tabletop to hear the sound and observe your reaction. Exploring cause and effect will help children to understand that their actions have an effect. In this activity we will be making music with things from our kitchen- pots and spoons.

What you will need:

-a pot or metal mixing bowl

-a wooden spoon or spatula

Engaging with Your Child

Place a pot or metal mixing bowl upside down so that that bottom faces up. Show your child how to hit the pot/bowl to make a noise. “Look what happens when I hit this pot. It makes a sound. Now you try.” Encourage your child to hit the pot/bowl and sing a favourite song while he/she hits along. To extend this experience, you can try out different pots/bowls and/or provide additional kitchen utensils as each type will make a slightly different sound. For example, try a silicone basting brush, a wooden chopstick or a potato masher.
