Dancing with Ribbon

Dancing is a
great way to express one's feelings and move one's body! Young children are always on the move and setting up experiences that promote whole body movement will encourage further development of their large muscles. Add some upbeat music and watch your child sway, jump, twist, turn, shake and bounce!

Materials:

  • A ribbon, a scarf, or a length of party streamer works well too

  • Music

Engaging with Your Child

Create a bit of open space for this activity and have your music nearby. Introduce the ribbon to your child and have one available for you too. Demonstrate how you can move with the ribbon, “I am waving my ribbon up high.” or, “I am moving the ribbon in a big circle.” Play some music and invite your child to move their body, “Let’s dance with the ribbon, how do you want to move your body?” During this learning experience, copy the actions of your child. This will give your child some encouragement and validationit will make your child feel good about his/her own expressions and movementAlso try labelling your child’s movements to inject some vocabulary and language into this experience, “You are jumping to the music.” or, “You are twirling and waving your ribbon.”
