I Spy with Books

Children looking at books

This is a twist from the original and beloved “I Spy” game that will have your child happily engaged. Open your child’s favourite book and encourage your child to seek out items from the pages of the book. It’s simple and all you need is a picture book to start. The learning that can occur during this activity includes vocabulary, book and print knowledge, as well as language comprehension, can your child find what you are asking for?

Materials:

  • A book with lots of pictures. Children’s dictionary books are great for this activity

Engaging with Your Child

Snuggle up and open a book. Start by saying, “There’s a lot of pictures on this page. What do you see?” Allow your child a few moments to think over your question and let him/her respond if your child is able to. Begin the game of I Spy, “I spy a cat with a black tail. Where is the cat with a black tail?” Wait for a response- young children may need extra time to process your request. Point out the item and say, “Here’s the cat with a black tail.” Continue playing and turn take with your child if your child is able to.
