Representing Shapes with Marshmallows and Toothpicks

Early shape recognition sets the foundation for later learning on geometry. Early learning around geometry involves recognizing and naming simple shapes and their attributes. Has your child been able to recognize some basic shapes? Around 2 years of age, your child may point out and name shapes like square, star, triangle or circle while also recognizing some of the distinct differences between them. This activity is fun and tasty! Connect marshmallows with toothpicks to make some shapes. Don’t have marshmallows? Use play dough instead.

What you will need:

-toothpicks

-marshmallows (you can substitute with play dough)

Engaging with your child

Start by introducing the activity to your child. It is best to set-up the marshmallows and toothpicks at a table and invite your child over, “Look at what I've set up here for us today.  We are going to make some shapes with marshmallows and toothpicks”. Teach your child how to insert the toothpick into the marshmallow and guide him/her to represent some basic shapes. Next, talk about the shapes and build upon their understanding of them, “A square has four corners and four sides.” And/Or, “A triangle has 3 corners and 3 sides while a circle has no corners.” Encourage your child to continue connecting with toothpicks and marshmallowssee what else he/she can represent!
