Who’s Hiding Under the Blanket?
Object permanence is the understanding that an object still exists even when it can no longer be seen. When your baby has object permanence, he/she knows that just because they can’t see an object it is still there. Keep your infant and toddler guessing in this game “Who’s hiding under the blanket?”
- A few of baby’s favourite toys
- A thin blanket (a swaddling blanket or a thin scarf)
Why not make up a little song to capture your child’s interest? Try it to the tune of “The More We Get Together”:
Who’s hiding under the blanket, the blanket, the blanket?
Who’s hiding under the blanket,
Let us see (reveal what’s under the blanket)
Lift up the blanket and announce the discovery “It was Mr. Giraffe hiding under there! Let’s hide him again.” Repetition is very important for children as it takes many repeated experiences for them to master new skills and concepts. Help your child master object permanence by playing simple games like this over and over and over again.
