Exploring Temperatures

Early learners make sense of their world through all of their senses. As caregivers, you have seen your child look at, hold, and even taste (mouth) many objects in their environment. Today’s simple activity is comparing temperature by making warm and cold sensory bottles and comparing the two.
-
Fill one of the two plastic bottles with ice water and the other with warm tap water. Make sure to run your hand through the water and ensure that it is not too warm for your child to handle.
-
Secure the lids of the two bottles and place it on the floor for your child to investigate.
Engaging with Your Child:
Place the two bottles in front of your child and invite your child to explore them, “Feel these bottles, how do they feel?” Allow your child to freely explore by touching, rubbing, and squeezing the bottles. Be responsive to their actions and reactions, “Ooh does this bottle feel cold? How about this one? How does this one feel when you touch it?” Point out the difference to your child and label the properties. To build on your child’s understanding of hot and cold, name other things from their experience that they associate with warm/hot (i.e., the sun, soup, bath) and cold (i.e., ice, fridge, snow).
