Lava Bottles – An Arts and Science Activity

Time to explore what happens when you mix oil with water! In this activity, children create “lava bottles” out of recycled materials and common kitchen ingredients. The effect will have some similar characteristics to conventional lava lamps, but with a homemade vibe!

What you will need:

  • A plastic bottle
  • Water
  • Oil (any type of cooking oil will do).
  • Food colouring
  • Glue gun or crazy glue for securing the lid.

Process:

  • Fill the bottle ¾ of the way full with water.
  • Add one tablespoon of oil.
  • Add a few drops of food colouring until you reach your desired hue.
  • With the help of an adult, it’s recommended that the bottle lid be glued on using a glue gun or crazy glue to ensure that it is on securely.

Tip: Creating lava bottles works well as an indoor or outdoor activity. To add a little extra “finesse” to your lava bottle, add some textured materials such as glitter, small beads, etc.
