Pom Pom Scoop

What happens when you place colourful pom poms in water? Let’s find out with our next sensory based activity. For young learners, it is very important to engage in activities with open ended materials. When we provide them with open ended materials, we support their creative growth and ability to make choices. So, let’s get started, using scoopers, cups, and containers have your child explore pom poms in water by touching, squeezing, sorting, and transferring them from one container to another.

What You Will Need:

  • Pom Poms

  • Water

  • Container (bucket, bin)

  • Utensils to Scoop (spoons, scoopers, cups, containers)

Engaging with Your Child

Start off the activity with an invitation to set-up, “Can you help me fill the container with water? I have an activity that I would like us to try”. Have your child place the pom poms in water, once they see the pom poms floating in water, they’ll instantly gravitate towards them. Engage with your child by asking and responding to simple open-ended questions “How do they feel in your hand” and then respond with how they feel in yours “they’re kind of squishy and wet in my hand”.  Once the activity is over, remember that cleaning up is also a learning experience. Dumping the water and squeezing the pom poms can be lots of fun!
