Reaction Time – Science and Physical Activity

How fast is your reaction time!? In this activity, children test just how fast they can react using a measuring tool that they’ll create themselves! This activity can be done indoors or outdoors.

Have children work out how long each of the six equal sections on the ruler need to be to add an additional math component to this activity.

What you will need:

  • A ruler (a 30 cm/12 inch ruler works well).
  • Paper, tape and/or masking or painter’s tape.
  • Scissors and markers or crayons.

Process:

  • Cover the ruler with paper or masking/painter’s tape.
  • Divide the ruler into six equal sections and colour each section a different colour.
  • Have one person drop the ruler unannounced, while the other tries to catch it mid-air!

Tip: Challenge yourself to catch the ruler on the lowest colour to the ground as it represents the quickest reflexes!
