Blowing Cups with Straws

All that we do with our children in their daily lives today, interconnects to skills they may learn and use in the future. Our next activity focuses around enhancing oral motor skills. What might that be? Oral motor skills are the movement of muscles inside the mouth. Why is it important, we may wonder? When we strengthen these muscles, we build a strong oral foundation for feeding related tasks such as chewing, biting, and crunching. So, let's get started!

What You Will Need:

  • Straws

  • Mini Cups (Pom poms can be used as a substitute

  • Finish Line- using string, tape, or popsicle sticks

This activity is fun for the entire family, so if they're siblings at home, get them to join in on the fun and make it a race! Using a straw, encourage your child to blow a cup to the finish line.

Process:

  1. 1. Start by creating a “starting” and “finishing” line using the materials you have available.

  1. 2. Next, place the cup(s) on the starting line and encourage your child to blow through the straw.

  1. 3. The air that will come out the other end of the straw will be the driving force to move the cup. If this is the first time your child is using a straw, they might have some trouble using it. Try different sized straws to see which one works better.
