Cloud Watching with Binoculars

Our next activity is a calming and creative way to connect your child with nature! Encourage abstract thought process by observing clouds and nurturing your child's imagination.

What You Will Need

  • - Scissors

  • - Hole Puncher (if available)

  • - Paper Towel Tubes

  • - Yarn or String

  • - Tape

  • - Materials to decorate (markers, crayons, glitter glue, construction paper, etc.)

Process: Making Binoculars

1). Using scissors, cut the paper towel tube in half, you should now have two mini paper towel tubes.

2.) Next, place the two mini paper towel tubes side by side and then secure them with tape.

3.) Using scissors or a hole puncher, make a hole on the outer edge of each roll.

4.) Using one end of the yarn, thread through one hole and secure it with a knot. You can then take the other end of the yarn and repeat the action with the other side.

5.) Decorate your binoculars using materials of your choice and then head outdoors to begin your cloud gazing adventure!

Caregivers make sure to make a pair of binoculars for yourselves!

Engaging with Your Child

Go exploring with your child for the perfect spot to lay and watch the clouds, it could be at the park or even your backyard. Start the experience of by encouraging your child to look through the binoculars, while look through yours! Ask open-ended questions like, “That cloud looks like a circle, what shapes do you see? That cloud is so long that it reminds me of a train, what does it look like to you?”. This will spark curiosity and have your child's imagination soaring. What you may see, your child may see differently and it will help you to gain perspective.
