Boot Planters – An Arts and Science Activity

Let's think outside the planter box and create something different to hold our plants! For this, you’ll need an old boot.

What You Will Need:

  • 1 old boot (ask an adult for permission when choosing a boot)
  • Flower seeds or a plant
  • Potting soil
  • Paint and paint brushes
  • Hammer and a nail, or a drill (this part must be done with the assistance of an adult)

Process:

  • With the help of an adult, use the hammer and nail to punch holes in the bottom of boot for drainage. This can also be done using a drill – which should definitely be done by an adult.
  • Using your creativity, paint and decorate the boot any way you like, and then let it dry.
  • Fill the boot with potting soil, make sure you push some into the toe.
  • Gently push seeds into the potting soil (big seeds should be placed about an inch deep, and little seeds about half an inch). You may also opt to set a plant into the boot, then cover its roots with soil.
  • Put the boot in a sunny place and water it every few days. After the plant start growing, you will need to feed it with fertilizer.

Tip: Small containers like boots work best for growing smaller plants.
