3-D Squeeze Chalk
Using materials from around the kitchen, make 3-D squeeze chalk and inspire your child to create designs and practice writing techniques.
What You Will Need:
-
½ cup of cornstarch
-
2 tablespoons flour
-
¼ cup of water
-
4-6 drops of food coloring
-
Medium zip baggie
Instructions:
-
Mix cornstarch and flour together in a small bowl.
-
Add water and food coloring.
-
Mix until the consistency of a thick paste. If paste is to dry, sprinkle with a little water and stir.
-
Pour mixture into baggie and seal.
-
Cut a small hole in the corner of the zip bag and squeeze the chalk out of the bag and onto the sidewalk.
We recommend implementing this activity outdoors to take advantage of the space and good weather but it’s not necessary. To carry on the activity indoors, you can use black construction paper or Bristol board and squeeze the chalk on to it.
Engaging with Your Child
Hand your child the baggie with the mixture and give them verbal directions; “Use your hand and squeeze the baggie, let's sit on the floor so we can see closely, oh how about we go in a circular motion to see what happens, it's making a circle! What design is yours making?”. Provide step-by-step visual directions and encourage your child to practice writing letters.
