Creating Process Focused Art

Children love open-ended crafts because it provides them with the freedom to create and explore without expectations. Our next activity focuses around providing children with an opportunity to work with open-ended materials so they can express themselves through their work using their imagination, creativity, and social skills.

Materials to Consider:

  • - Paper doilies

  • Paint brush

  • Paint, crayons, markers

  • Paper (any color)

  • Paint tray, or pallet

  • Googly eyes

  • Toothpicks

  • Glue

  • Tape

  • Glitter

  • Cotton balls

  • Pipe cleaners

Engaging with Your Child

Begin by laying out each material on the table, as they wait in anticipation, ask open-ended questions about each material; I.e. with the doilies, bring their attention to the circular shape, the bright white colour, and the different designs imprinted on them. Your child might want to draw, paint, or colour, it could be tempting, but try to avoid taking controlEvery new experience requires space and time, and when they come up with their own conclusion, it will help them feel more confident about their significance in their world.
