Let’s Talk Nutrition and Making Food Fun
As caregivers, it is essential that we provide our children with a healthy balanced diet to support their mental and physical growth. You may notice, that some children might be pickier with their food than others, but that’s okay! For some it might be about the visual experience and for others, the fear of trying something new.
Creative food activities to consider
-
- Melon scoops- Provide your child with an ice cream scooper and encourage them to scoop out the melon.
-
- Creating a face on a sandwich- Provide your child with bread, spread, and different toppings to create faces.
-
- Fruit or Vegetable Plate- Provide your child with a plate of assorted vegetables or fruits and encourage them to use their imagination to arrange the food in creative way.
Starting off, you need to understand that ultimately, it is your child’s decision whether to eat or not what’s provided for them. What you can do is lead by example, start by preparing a plate of food for your child and make sure to prepare one for yourself that is identical to theirs. Once you begin eating, exaggerate how delicious the food is, “this is the most delicious carrot that I have ever eaten in my life!”. They might become curious and want to take a nibble on theirs. Talk to them about the food on the table and where it comes from, “milk comes from cows and if you drink milk you will have healthy bones and teeth just like mine”. If you notice them rejecting food, try to avoid being pushy or talking control.
