You may have noticed that there are plenty of squirrels in your neighborhood. The season of Fall is the time these fury little creatures look and gather food to prepare themselves for the cold winter months, when food is scarce. On your next outdoor walk, pause, look closely, and observe all the movements squirrels preform and support the experience by engaging in this fun rhyme.  

I am a Squirrel 

 I am a Squirrel in a tall, tall tree (Stretch out your arms towards the sky)  

I like to look around and see, see, see (Make your hands into binocular shapes and look around)  

I am picking acorns for my lunch (Pick invisible acorns from the air) 

 I love the way they crunch, crunch, crunch (Make exaggerated crunches with your mouth)  

Sometimes I stretch my arms up to the sky (Spread arms out wide) 

 Take a leap, and start to fly (Jump and fly around) 

Engaging with Your Child 

As you begin saying the rhyme, follow it up with the actions and fully engage in movement. The part of the rhyme that says “stretch out your arms towards the sky”, consider asking your child, “How high can you stretch?”, “Can you try stretching on your tippy toes?”. The next part of the rhyme, consider asking your child “What do you see?”, supporting language and communication. Continuing on, allow your child’s imagination to run free by pretending to pick-up invisible acorn’s and making crunching sounds with your mouth. You can say, “How does it taste, can you share some with me?”. Lastly, spread your arms out wide and jump and fly. This is a perfect invitation to run, laugh and move your bodies.
