Shape Hunt

Engage your child’s fundamental movement skills of walking, running, jumping, and hopping by inviting them to hunt for a series of shapes taped to the floor, using different movements each time!

What You will Need

  • - Masking tape or string

  • - Construction paper

  • - Scissors

  • - Shaped Objects (Optional)

Process

  • 1. Tape down different shapes on the ground.

  • 2. Cut out the same shapes out of construction paper.

Engaging with Your Child

The best method of encouraging movement is to be involved and engaged with your child. To introduce this game to your child, begin by giving your child several cut-out shapes and have them match the shapes that are taped to the floor around the room. Discuss the names of the shapes such as square, circle, triangle, heart, etc. To get ready for movement, call out a shape and each time you call out a shape, encourage your child to move around the room in different ways. For example, “Where’s the Triangle? Let's walk very slowly on our tippy-toes to the Triangle”.

You can move like different animals in different ways:

  • - Slithering like snakes

  • Sprinting like a cheetah

  • Hopping like a bunny

  • Stomping like an elephant

  • Galloping like a horse
