Winter Garden

Gardening in the winter, hmmm.... Teach your child about responsibility, patience and understanding as they care for their winter garden, using pre-existing materials from home

What You will Need

  • - Deep tray

  • - Jug

  • - Water

  • - Sun

  • - Ends of carrots, celery, onions, lettuce etc.

  •

Process

  1. 1.Place your ends in the tray.

  1. 2. Fill with water.

  1. 3. Place the tray close to a window or where light comes in.

  1. 4. Watch your garden grow!

  2.

Engaging with Your Child

To begin, collect your ends and invite your child to the experience.  As your child places the vegetable ends in the tray, consider asking, What do you think this vegetable is named?. Once the tray is ready with the ends and water, find a sunny spot to place the tray.  Over the course of the days, consider asking your child, Does our garden need more water?, this encourages responsibility, understanding, and empathyYou can build on self –confidence by emphasizing to your child about all the care and nurture they gave to the garden to grow.
