Shredded Paper Sensory Play
By offering sensory based activities, you provide your child with an opportunity to stimulate their senses (taste, smell, sight, touch, sound). Our next sensory activity is as simple as it gets, continue with holding onto the newspapers you receive and create paper filled sensory bins.
-
- Newspaper
-
- Scissors
-
- Large bin
-
- Large spoons
-
- Bowls or cups
-
1. Collect newspapers and begin to cut in strips (if you have a shredder this would be ideal).
-
2. Place cut/shredded clippings in large bin.
-
3. Place spoons bowls/cups next to bin.
-
4. Additionally, you can add animals, trucks, and balls in bin.
Invite your child to play and begin by allowing them time to explore this material. Consider asking thought provoking questions, “I wonder what it feels like, I wonder what it sounds like?”, offering them an opportunity to express their ideas. As your child begins to use the materials, comment on their movements and behavior, “I notice how you are using the spoon to mix, I notice you are filling the bowl with paper”. Affirming these observations contributes with building and supporting the connections being made. As your child engages in play, consider asking your child, “I wonder what will happen if you add water”, this extension of learning supports the cause and effects with sensory play.
