Make Your Own Drum
Yes, we’re making a drum! Children love creating music by banging and tapping on objects. Enrich their interests by offering them an opportunity to create the musical instrument themselves using materials that are easily accessible from within our homes.
-
- 1 Empty large can, container, bin or bucket as a base
-
Clear packaging tape or plastic bag as a drum head
-
- 2 Wooden spoons or wooden sticks as drum sticks
-
- Optional: Decorative art materials (construction paper, markers, feathers, stickers, pompoms, fabric scraps, glitter, etc.)
-
- Optional: YouTube video “When the Band Comes Marching In” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1h6F-YngTi0
-
- Optional: YouTube video “Easy First Drum Lesson https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUERPM7NGN0

1. While the base is standing upright, cover the top of the base with tape. If you are using a plastic bag, tighten the bag at the top of the base and tighten it by taping it to the sides.
-
2. Cover the sides of the base with paper and give your child materials to decorate it with.

Engaging with Your Child
Begin this activity by encouraging your child to create the drum with you. If you have a young child, you can create the drum and allow them to make marks using crayons, markers or paint around the base of the drum. Once your drum is ready to use, you can play your child’s favourite song or play “When the Band Comes Marching In” and encourage your child to drum along with the music. Drumming can support your child’s hand-eye coordination skills and can also be a great release of emotions for your child to let out which invites a calmer state of mind. Drum on!
Tip: Play the “Easy First Drum Lesson” YouTube video to introduce a short, simple lesson on drumming for your child.
