Shaving Cream Rain Clouds
Today’s science experiment will provide your child the opportunity to learn about clouds and rain. As the weather changes throughout the winter season, use each change as an opportunity to observe the sky whether it’s clear, cloudy, raining or snowing. It’s easy to do and pleasant to watch. So, let’s begin.
-
- 1 Clear cup/jar
-
- Water
-
- Shaving cream
-
- Food Colour
-
- Optional: Pipettes
-
- Optional: Small bowls
-
1. Fill a clear cup with water.
-
2. Add a thin layer of shaving cream to create a “fluffy” cloud on top of the water.
-
3. Use multiple small bowls and fill them with a variety of different food colours.
-
4. Add several drops of food coloring by using a pipette or directly from the food colour bottle.
-
5. Observe how the rain falls from the cloud.
When you spend time outdoors, ask your child to look up in the sky and look at the various sizes and shapes of the clouds. When you initiate small conversations with your child about daily observations, it can foster a sense of curiosity within your child to explore and investigate what interests them.
The purpose of this activity is to give your child a hands-on learning experience of how rain falls from clouds. To begin this activity, ask your child to use the pipette and pick up a colour of their choice to drop it into the cloudy jar. The action of picking up the colour and dropping it into the water is a fun way to get your child fine-tuning their fine motor skills. Ask them to observe the changes that happen in the jar. If the food colour doesn’t fall through the cloud, ask them to drop more food colour into the cloud till the rain falls from the cloud. This is a fun science experiment where your child can mix up the colours and simply observe what changes happen in the jar.
