Number Weave Activity

This easy and simple activity will take a few minutes to set up. It integrates learning about math while strengthening those fine motor skills. Be ready to weave the string through numbers in ascending order.

Celebrating Black History Month

Do you know who Katherine G. Johnson is? She was a NASA mathematician who helped the first astronauts go into space!

What You will Need

  • - Papers

  • Scissors

  • Tape

  • Marker or Pen

  • Long string or shoe lace

Process

  1. 1. Cut 10 (more or less) strips of white or coloured paper.

  1. 2. Use a marker or a pen, number each strip of paper 1 through 10 (more or less).

  1. 3. Tape or glue the end of each strip of paper together to make a tube.

  1. 4. Tape the individual number tubes on the desk or a cardboard.

  1. 5. Let your child use a string or shoe lace to connect the numbers by order.

Engaging with Your Child

The focus of this activity will be on your child using the small muscles in their hands that control their fingers and thumbs to pass the string through the paper tubes. This will engage their hand-eye coordination skills to complete the simple task. The more practice they get, the more they will master this skill. You can begin this activity by asking your child to count the numbers on the pieces of paper. If they are advanced enough, ask them to arrange the numbers in order by threading the string through them. If you have a young child, allow them to thread the string through the tubes in any order they prefer and find the opportunity to call out the number they are working through. This will lay the foundation for them to begin recognizing and counting numbers.

Tip:
For younger ones, instead of writing numbers, you may draw dots or any other symbol to represent numbers to count together while they thread the string through the tube. For older children, you can challenge them to count numbers compare numbers to each other, add, or subtract depending on their skill level.
