Celebrating Black History Month
February 1st marks the beginning of Black History Month. PLASP Child Care Services honours this month as an opportunity for shared learning and celebration of the many contributions of Black individuals in our community and beyond. At the same time, we recognize that we cannot truly understand Black history unless we acknowledge the troubling history of anti-black racism in our society.
As part of PLASP’s endeavor to create opportunities for age-appropriate learning, we will be sharing curriculum ideas with a focus on Black history on our website and social media channels throughout the month. Additionally, we encourage you to visit educational resources provided online recommended by our four partnering school boards and the Government of Canada.
As an organization, we believe that children are never too young to start learning about fairness, justice and love and that the learning that we may undertake in February to learn more about Black history, should be celebrated and continued throughout the year. As Jean Augustine, the first Black Canadian woman elected to the Parliament of Canada, stated, “Black history is not just for Black people – Black history is Canadian history”.
