Create Your Own Cardboard Construction Set
Today’s activity is all about making a construction set out of cardboard tubes. Children love to build, destroy and rebuild. You’ve probably seen them busy for hours making different structures with LEGO. This activity will support them in building their sense of autonomy every time they make their own choices. Collect the cardboard tubes you have at home and start making your own construction set. The more you collect, the more you can build!
-
- Cardboard tubes from toilet paper or paper towel
-
- Scissors
-
- Optional: Markers, coloured pencils, crayons, pastels, etc.
-
1. Cut the cardboard tubes into smaller pieces.
-
2. Cut slits into the top and bottom of each tube.
-
3. Optional: Provide your child with materials to easily decorate the tubes however their heart desires.
This activity is a great opportunity for your child to establish their autonomy because it gives them limitless opportunities to explore and play with the tubes, which requires them to make their own decisions on how to achieve the ideas in their head. Autonomy is an important skill for emotional development and it allows a child to build their confidence, self-esteem and independence. Set-up this activity by preparing the tubes with slits and allow your child to direct their play by making their own choices and decisions. They may stack, roll, colour, crush, line up, look through, connect, measure, count, or speak through the tubes. Whatever it is your child does, enrich their play by pairing language with their actions, this can help them build a stronger understanding of the spoken language. Enrich their experience further by giving them your undivided attention and making positive comments on their ideas, this can help them feel good about their achievements.
