Part One: Make your Own Microphone
Hello there, rock stars!! Are you ready to make your own microphones to use for tomorrow's talent show? This activity will focus on strengthening those fine motor skills while expressing ourselves creatively.
-
- Small sheet of foil
-
- Cardboard toilet or paper roll
-
- Tape
-
- Scissors
-
- Yarn or String
-
- Art materials of your choice such as stickers, markers, crayons, stamps, paint, glitter, etc.
-
1. Roll a ball out of the foil.
-
2. Tape the ball to the top of the tube.
-
3. Tape the short yarn or string to the bottom of the tube. The yarn represents the wire that comes attached to microphones.
-
4. Time to have fun decorating the microphone.
Tip: You can use a hot glue gun to secure the foil to the tube so it lasts longer. Tape might loosen up easily. ensure children’s safety and keep the hot glue gun out of reach.
This activity will focus on creating a new craft enjoying the process of creative expression. This will provide your child an opportunity to freely explore the materials you have provided for them in a way where the process is valued more than the end-product. Begin this activity by asking your child “I would like us to have a talent show tomorrow, would you like to make a microphone with me today?”. Create your own microphone alongside your child, they learn best through observing others. You can narrate the steps you’re doing throughout the process, like “I’m going to roll this foil into a big, big ball like this. Roll, roll, roll...”. Actions such as rolling the foil, using scissors to cut and taping pieces together will help your child strengthen the muscles in their little hands. Meet them at their developmental level and support them if they need but also allow them to challenge themselves to complete it by themselves. Once it comes time to design the tube of the microphone, be wild and free. Allow your child to decorate it however they please – this will allow them to freely express themselves through their artwork. This will give them a sense of pride and accomplishment. Praise your child’s efforts and have fun!
