Yarn Hair Salon

Somebody needs a haircut hereToday’s fun activity will provide children the opportunity to practice refining their scissor-cutting skills.

What You will Need

  • - A cardboard sheet or paper

  • - A marker (or pen, pencil, crayons, etc.)

  • - A hole puncher

  • - Some yarn

  • - Child-friendly scissors

Process

  1. - Provide materials.

  1. - Cut out a face shape, it can be an ovel, circle, or square.

  1. - Ask your child to draw the details of a face on the cardboard.

  1. - Use the hole puncher and puncture holes along the edges.

  1. - Cut long strings of yarn and fold together, weave through each hole and tie.

  1. - Do this to every hole you have punctured.

  1. - Your client is ready for a new hairdo.

Engaging with Your Child

Today’s activity will focus on strengthening your child's fine motor and bilateral coordination skills by using their index finger and thumb to hold the scissors to cut strands of yarn-hair. Bilateral coordination is the ability to use the right and left sides of your body at the same time or in alternating movements. Practicing these skills can help your child in gaining the confidence to complete tasks independently, such as zipping their jacket, feeding themselves and cutting paper. Invite your child by saying “Oh my, oh my, our friend looks like they need a haircut. Can you give them a haircut?”. Provide your child with kid-friendly scissors and encourage their efforts in cutting the yarn hair.

Using scissors requires hand separation, which is difficult to do for very little hands. If your child is very young, you can encourage them to give your client a new hair style instead of a haircut. Your child may stroke the yarn hair, separate the hair strands, overlap hair strands, or pull apart one strand at a time. Meet your child at their developmental level and have fun giving your client a new hair-do at your very own salon.
