Feed the Hungry Sharks Sensory Bag
Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day
March 17 commemorates the day that St. Patrick passed away. St. Patrick was a 5th century missionary in Ireland that was credited to bringing Christianity to parts of Ireland. This day is usually celebrated with wearing the colour green because Ireland is known as the Emerald Isle. The shamrock is also an important symbol because it is the national symbol of Ireland.
Feed the Hungry Sharks Sensory Bag
Today’s activity is simple and fun. The focus of this activity is to have fun feeding the sharks all while strengthening your child’s fine motor and hand-eye coordination skills.
-
- Some small items such as small toys, shapes, pompoms, etc.
-
- Optional: Green food colour.
-
1. Use the marker and draw a shark or two on the Ziploc bag. You can draw any type of animal your child prefers.
-
2. Add the water and small items inside the bag.
-
3. Seal the bag with tape to make sure it doesn’t spill
-
4. Tape all the edges of the Ziploc bag to the top of any safe surface.
-
5. Move the items in the bag to feed the sharks.
Today’s activity will be mixing children's fascination in sharks with their fascination in being able to move objects from point A to point B. This activity gives young children a sensory-filled experience all while strengthening the tiny muscles in their hands that will aid in tasks such as holding a pencil, dressing up and feeding themselves. Set up this activity and invite your child by saying “I wonder how many tiles you can feed the shark.”. Give your child the space to enjoy this sensory experience and to take the lead in their play. Have fun!
Tip: For children that are familiar with counting, you can encourage them to count the items they feed their shark. This will help them in strengthening their one-by-one counting skills, which helps build the foundation of their future math skills.
