Engaging with Your Child

This messy block building activity gives children the freedom to create and explore with zero expectations of an outcome. All ideas, feelings, thoughts and creations expressed during this open-ended activity are welcome. Set-up this activity and invite your child by saying Ooo, the shaving cream feels cold. I’m going to dip one block in it and see how it sits on it. Can you show me what you can do with this?”. The focus of this activity is for your child to enjoy the process of creating whatever their heart desires. Ask them open-ended questions such as “What did you make?” or “What does that feel like?”. They may have created a bridge with a river underneath, a tower with sparkles or a car that flies. Welcome their creations with a smile and praise their efforts for working so hard on using their imagination.
