Comb Painting
Comb Painting
Today’s activity is all about enjoying the process of exploring textures, creating patterns, observing colour mixing and learning through play. This fun painting activity teaches children to think outside the box and use ordinary materials in different ways.
-
Tape the ends of the paper or foil on a tray.
-
Squirt the paint directly onto the paper or foil.
-
Use the comb/brush to scrape through the paint.
This activity will focus on getting in the flow of the creative process and experimenting with ways we can use an everyday object in a new setting. Begin by inviting your child “Would you like to paint with combs today? What colours of paint would you like to choose?”. Encourage your child to help you gather the materials and walk through the process together. Enrich your child’s language by narrating the sounds or actions they are doing such as swish, squish, twirl, stroke, poke, mix, scoop, etc. While you are painting, ask your child open-ended questions such as “I wonder what happens when you mix red and blue together? Green and orange? What did you make? How does that feel?”. Encourage your child to take the lead in experimenting and enjoy the process together. The possibilities are endless!
Tip: If your child shows a high interest in this activity, you can ask them to bring other everyday items to their painting session (spoon, Q-tip, popsicle stick, rocks, etc.)
