Shadow Art

For today’s activity, all you need is natural sunlight or light from a lamp to create your own shadow art. Young children are fascinated when the discover the phenomena of shadows. This activity will provide them the opportunity to create art based on the shadows of their favourite toys.
-
Find a comfortable space indoors or outdoors.
-
Line up your favourite toys.
-
Place the paper where you see the shadows whether it is next to, behind, in front of or under.
-
Use a marker, chalk or crayon to outline or colour in the space of the shadow.
Light and shadow play can provide hours of learning and amusement. Shadow play encourages imagination, observation and interpretation. Let us begin learning about shadows by simply observing, tracing and colouring them in. Invite your child by saying “Did you see the shadow of this toy?” and point it out to your child, “Would you like to collect more toys so we can see what all their shadows look like?”. Provide your child with the suggested materials and find a comfortable space to take the time to explore light and shadows. Meet your child at their level and encourage them to observe or play with the shadows. If they are able to hold the crayon, ask them if they can colour the shadows in. It does not have to be perfect! Praise your child’s effort and encourage them to follow their curiosity. Observe your child’s expression as they watch the shadows changing shape and direction as you move the object around.
