Growing Flowers for Earth Day

Soil and flower seeds to plant for Earth Day

April 22nd marks the environmental movement that started in 1970 to make a conscious effort to look at the state of our planet and take measures to protect it. We will celebrate Earth Day by planting seeds. Gardening is a fun and educational lesson for children of all ages. Together we can restore Earth!

What You will Need

  • - Seeds

  • Pot or Container

  • Soil

  • Water in a spray bottle

  • Small shovel or a plastic spoon

  • Song: Earth Day Song by Owly Bird

Process

  1. 1. Use the small shovel or plastic spoon to fill the container with soil. Make sure to fill 3/4 of the pot, not up to the surface.

  1. 2. Use your finger to put a little bit pressure on the top of the soil but don’t pack the soil too tightly that you cannot make holes.

  1. 3. Plant your seeds one at a time as deep as the seed goes - 1/8 inch to a quarter inch deep.

  1. 4. Germination usually takes place in 7 to 10 days.

  1. 5. Use water to keep the soil moist, ensuring your plant gets enough moisture and sunlight.

  1. 6. Revisit your plant every day to observe how it grows.

Engaging with Your Child

Taking care of our planet all starts at home.  Our goal today is to have a discussion with our children about the ways that we can make our planet a greener and cleaner place to live.

Begin by watching the suggested video and sing along together. Prepare a pot for each person in this activity. Invite your child
“Would you like to plant seeds with me for Earth Day?”. Children love being involved in the process of activities. Walk your child through the steps of planting the seeds. Allow your child to make their own observations on how the soil and seeds feel, look and smell. Explain to them that the plant needs water, sunlight and love to grow every day. Use the spray bottle to mist it lightly daily and revisit the plant every day. Gardening allows children to grow their connection with Earth, helps develop their patience as they wait for the seeds to grow, helps them gain responsibility and empathy as they care for the plants all while learning about the life cycle of plants. End this activity by asking your child “What are other things we can do to take care of our home planet, Earth?”
