Engaging with Your Child

One of the best ways to teach children about the importance of reusing or conserving the earth’s resources is by using recycled materials. You can always find the best crafting items in nature. Invite your child to do this activity together by going for a walk and collecting nature treasures together. This is a perfect way to enjoy the natural environment and learn through interaction, engagement and observation. Discuss with your child the project that you are going to do together, ask questions such as, What should we collect to make our puppets?”, “What puppet are you going to make and why?”, “What can you use for the hair?” What can you use for the shoes?” and more. Always ask open-ended questions and give your child the patience and openness for them to ask you questions.

When you sit with your child to make the puppets, help your child to measure, cut, glue, tie as much or as little as needed. Offer your child to use the loose parts to learn the potential combinations. This support means a lot to your child and will even encourage them to do further activities with you.

Tip: You can always adapt the activity to your child’s age by simplifying the questions you ask and assisting younger children through the process.
