Engaging With Your Child

Children naturally are very curious about the world around them and nature provides many ways for them to explore their curiosity. Take these countless opportunities as an advantage to encourage children to observe, think, interact, ask questions, discover and learn. Any activity that integrates nature, provides an opportunity for children to learn how they affect the environment as well as how the environment affects them. Children can learn the ways to value and respect nature by observing us and the way we treat our environment.

Begin by watching the suggested video and talk about the insects and bugs that your child knows. Use this natural curiosity to encourage your child to observe the world and look to see what can be found in nature. Bugs are always the best tools to introduce science and biology in a fun and engaging way.

After collecting the items from the ground, sit with your child and discuss what bugs and insects can be made with these items. You can use your
phone or computer to open the picture of different insects and bugs and introduce their names to your child. This is a great way to enhance their vocabulary.

While doing this activity, focus on the topics that are interesting
to your child. Welcome their questions and go on a search hunt if they ask questions such as,
“How do butterflies and bees help plants grow?”, Why do bees' sting?”, Why do some bugs have six or eight legs?", “Can bugs swim?”, etc.

Tip:
Tailor the activity to meet your child at their developmental level. You can either simplify or complexify the questions and tasks to challenge their thoughts and abilities in a healthy manner.
