Rainbow Oil and Ice

Glass jar filled with water and colourful oils

Today’s science project will provide your child the opportunity to learn about density. Experimenting with oil, water and food colouring results in a beautiful picture to simply observe the phenomenon of what happens when we mix oil and water.

What You will Need

  • - Water

  • - Any type of Oil – preferably vegetable-based oil

  • - Food colouring

  • - Ice cube tray

  • - Glass vase or bowl

Process

  1. 1. Fill the ice tray cells with water.

  1. 2. Add a few drops of food colouring in each cell and mix.

  1. 3. Place the tray in the freezer until it looks solid.

  1. 4. Fill ¾ of the vase with water.

  1. 5. Add ½ cup oil to the vase.

  1. 6. Transfer the coloured ice cubes to the water and oil.

  1. 7. Observe what happens.

Engaging with Your Child

Easy science experiments not only make learning fun, they also help to develop the lifelong skills that children will need for goal setting, planning and problem solving. If you want your child to get the most benefits out of a science experiment, let them to choose the activity, make changes, and be involved in planning and preparing it.

Simply invite your child to do this experiment together by asking “
I wondered, what will happen if we add oil to water?” Before doing each step, ask “What do you think will happen next?”. For example, What do you think if we add oil to the water?”. Give your child enough time to think first before adding the oil. Encourage your child to add the oil and observe and explore what happens. When the oil and water doesn’t mix and oil floats on top of the water, provide your child a spoon to try mixing them and see the result. Asking open-ended questions will allow your child to critically think and analyze before answering your questions. Now, the amazing part starts. Ask your child What do you think will happen if we add the coloured ice cubes to the vase?” Let your child add them one by one and see what happens while ice cubes start melting.

Encourage your child to observe and think
How often does water drop from the ice cubes?”, “What shape are the drops?”, “Why does ice float?”, “Why does the liquid water sink?”.  Remember, there are no right or wrong answers. The focus is on experimenting and observing. Have fun and explore on!
