Nature Art Frame
There are many simple activities that you can do to build children’s observation skills in nature. Today we are making an easy nature art frame using recycled cardboard sheet or paper to encourage children to observe the world around them.
-
1. Draw any shape or picture onto a paper/cardboard.
-
2. Cut out the lines to be able to see through the shape.
-
3. Take the frame outside and move the frame around to observe the world around you.
Being outside inspires children’s curiosity and stimulates all their developing senses. You can start this activity simply by conversing about the environment around you. Talk about the elements such as the sky, trees, flowers, insects, birds, grass, colours and more.
Ask your child to help you in preparing the materials you need to make this simple frame. Ask your child questions such as “What shapes do you think we can draw on this paper?”. Try to choose simple pictures or shapes because it is easier to draw and cut. Let your child draw the shape they want and cut it out afterwards. Support your child as little or as much as they need depending on their capabilities.
After the drawing and cutting steps are done, take the frame outside and discover the world around you through this magical frame. Hold up the frame against any of the interesting natural objects to see the beautiful patterns, shapes and colours. Ask questions such as “What do you see?”, “What colours do you see?”, “What shapes do you see?”, and “Can you find something with a similar colour or shape around you?”.
Extend this activity by taking photos of the same nature frame and place throughout the changing seasons of the year. This will allow your child to observe how the seasons can affect the nature and colours around us.
