Outdoor Summer Sticky Collage

Child using sticky tape to make a natural collage on a treeToday let’s create a fun and super easy activity that can be set up by using contact paper and duct tape. When incorporating nature into art, the possibilities are truly endlessChildren will love this sticky activity by collecting nature's treasures and adding them to the collage. They will be fascinated by seeing what will and won't stick!

What You will Need

  • - Contact paper

  • - Scissors

  • - Tape

Process

  1. 1. Cut a piece of contact paper off the roll.

  1. 2. Peel off the backing.

  1. 3. Use the tape to secure the paper around a tree, to a wall or window or fence with the stick side out.

  1. 4. Let your child collect nature items such as leaves, pine cones, twigs, sticks, rocks, etc.

  1. 5. Let your child explore each piece and observe what items would or wouldn’t stick.

  1. 6. When finished, you can fold the paper or cut a same size piece of contact paper to cover the collage.

  1. 7. Your unique outdoor sticky collage is ready, well done.

Engaging with Your Child

Making a collage is an open-ended activity that allows children to freely explore and experiment different materials to create a unique and exciting masterpiece of art. Art activities such as collages assist children to improve their fine motor skills, learn about colours and textures, improve language development and practice skills such as patterning and cause and effect.

Simply invite your child to do this activity together by going to your backyard or a close park. Start by conversing about the environment around you, for example; the colours of the leaves and flowers, the size of the trees, etc. Have an active and ongoing conversation as your child picks up a leaf, “that's a beautiful green leaf you picked up” or “I see you are picking up pine cones, are they the same size and colour?”, “I like the feather you found! I wonder what animal that belongs too?”, “let’s pick up some rocks too, look at their shapes!” Compliment your child's findings and say “how about we turn our collection into a nature collage”.

Tip:
You can adapt this activity to your child’s age and level of skills by changing the questions you ask, how far you can go on a walk and how much assistance your child needs in collecting items, carrying the bag, etc.
