6 Tips to Prepare for PLASP’s Award-Winning Programs

While summer might still be in full swing, August is the perfect time to prepare your child(ren) for the start of a new school year – and their PLASP program!

Here are six tips to help ease your child(ren) into their PLASP child care program:

  1. Communicate with Your Child. Start by having an open and honest conversation with your child about the upcoming changes. Encourage them to ask questions and express their concerns. When they do, offer stories of your own first-day jitters to show them they are not alone and what they’re feeling is understandable.
  2. Establish a Routine. A consistent routine will support your child to feel secure, safe and comfortable throughout changes in their day to day routine. A couple of weeks before the first day of school starts, help your child create a routine by going to bed and waking up the same time each day, brushing teeth, having breakfast, packing lunch, and getting dressed and ready for school. Keep in mind that depending on your child’s age and development, they may need different amount of preparation time.  For example, younger children, like those in kindergarten may need more time than children in higher grades. Adjust the routine to fit your child’s individual needs.
  3. Visit the School Grounds. Walk or drive by the school to help your child become familiar with the surroundings. Spending some time at the playground and the area around the school can help reduce first day jitters and anxiety.

  4. Be Patient. Children may need time to adjust to a new routine and environment, and it's important to give them the space and support they need during this time. Be compassionate, loving and patient with your child and, most importantly, with yourself. Take it day by day!
  5. First Day of School: Smooth Transition. On the first day of school, try to arrive a bit early to give your child time to get comfortable. Use this opportunity to introduce them to their PLASP educator. Establishing this relationship will give you a peace of mind and it will allow your child to transition more easily into their program.
  6. After the First Day of School: Building Connections. Getting to know others in your child’s PLASP program can also make a big difference. Connecting with other PLASP families during various program events can also provide a support system and can enhance your overall experience with PLASP. Consider organizing playdates or attending events together to help your child make new friends and feel more comfortable.

Welcome to PLASP and have a great first day!
